Description

A delicious and fluffy homemade dinner roll recipe, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing
  • Flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and the egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough to release air. Divide the dough into 12-16 equal pieces, shaping each into a smooth ball. Place them in a greased baking dish or cast-iron skillet, slightly apart.
  6. Second Rise: Cover the rolls lightly and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Once the rolls have risen, bake them for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  8. Finish: Remove from the oven and immediately brush with melted butter for a glossy finish.

Notes

  • Temperature Check: Ensure the milk is warm but not hot to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Flour Addition: Add more flour only if necessary, as too much can make the rolls dense.
  • Butter Brush: Brushing with butter right out of the oven enhances flavor and keeps the rolls soft.
