Description

These puff pastry hearts filled with hummus and pesto are a delightful and fun treat, perfect for sharing!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry (gluten-free or regular!)
  • 1 egg, whisked (for egg wash)
  • hummus (any flavor)
  • pesto (link to homemade recipe in the notes)
  • fresh tomato, chopped
  • fresh basil, for topping
  • nutella (link to healthy nutella in the notes)
  • fresh strawberries, for topping (after baking)
  • jam

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment.
  2. Roll the sheet of puff pastry out flat. Cut it in half vertically and horizontally to create 4 squares.
  3. Then cut each square into 4 smaller squares.
  4. Use a cookie cutter to cut a heart shape out of the center of half of the squares.
  5. Use a fork to poke holes in the remaining halves.
  6. Brush the squares with holes with egg wash.
  7. Place the heart-shaped squares on top of the holed squares.
  8. Put a small spoonful of hummus and pesto inside the heart cutouts (don’t add too much!). You can also include tiny chopped tomatoes and parmesan.
  9. Pop the tray in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  10. Bake straight from the freezer, following the box instructions (this may vary depending on the puff pastry).
  11. Flip the pan halfway through for even browning.
  12. When golden, they’re done!
  13. Top with fresh basil and serve on a cute board for a fun presentation.
